LEARNERS

The Urgent Care Centre provides elective opportunities for medical students and residents currently training in a Canadian medical institution. Learners will be exposed to a diverse multicultural population and will have the opportunity to manage a variety of primary care and urgent care presentations. Learners will become familiar with the following procedures: laceration repairs, splinting/casting, abscess incision and drainage, simple joint reductions and relocations, as well as EKG technical and interpretation skills. Trainees will also be exposed to a fully integrated Electronic Medical Record (EMR) where they will learn appropriate documentation, ordering and interpreting laboratory results and diagnostic imaging. Electives at the UCC can be arranged from 2-4 weeks depending on availability and adequate supervision. Primary preceptors at the UCC are Family Physicians and Emergency Room Physicians with faculty appointments at the University of Toronto and/or McMaster University. Learners may be required to work at any of our 4 locations during the elective period. Please refer to locations on our website.

“Beneficial, high-volume clinical elective for family medicine trainees. Through my experience I was able to increase my skills in patient flow, assessment and management of acute limiting illnesses as well as enhancing my procedural skills including suturing and incision and drainages.”

Kimberly Reiter, BMSc, MD PGY-1 Family Medicine

North York General Hospital Department of Family and Community Medicine | University of Toronto

“My experience as a resident learner at the UCC was excellent. It provided me a fast-paced, learner friendly environment where I was able to test my skills and knowledge in a community family medicine/walk-in setting. My confidence grew immensely from managing a high volume of patients during my time there. The variety of cases was a great learning tool. It was evident to my home site preceptors that I had become more efficient in my time management and displayed increased confidence as well. Overall, I was better prepared for practice outside of residency after this elective and would recommend it to other family medicine residents.”

Daniel Corazolla

Former Family Medicine Resident, University of Toronto

‘My learning experience working at the Urgent Care Centre was exceptional. There were many procedural opportunities overall, and a good exposure to acute presentations. This elective has made me more comfortable at the end of my residency, with transition to independent practice. I highly recommend this elective to residents who are seeking exposure to urgent care in a safe learning environment with support, and exposure to more procedures. “

Dr. Kishan Shan

PGY2 Family Medicine, University of Toronto

“Fantastic elective experience all around. The highlights for me were staff that frequently taught around interesting cases and being able to perform lots of minor procedures. Clinic volumes that prepare you well for independent practice while not making you feel overwhelmed. I would highly recommend this elective to any colleague.”
